Getting Around Budapest

Budapest has one of the most modern transportation systems in the world. It includes an extensive overland transportation service, a modern subway system, and several taxi services that connect Budapest's 22 transportation districts quite well. Their efficiency and reliability make it very easy for most travelers to get around town without a vehicle. As a result, it is worth knowing how to use Budapest's transportation system.

With this thought in mind, here is a brief guides that can help readers learn how to use Budapest's transportation system...

Budapest features an overland transportation system that is owned by the federal government's BKV.
The BKV manages Budapest's overland transportation service that provides bus and streetcar rides to passengers. Passengers may take one of over 150 routes that go around town approximately every 5-9 minutes during peak times and every 40-60 minutes thereafter from 4 AM to 11 PM. Major stops include Budapest's airport, Moszkva Square, Városház Square, Vörösmarty Square, and number 6 Zsókavár Street. The Vörösmarty Square stop is a particularly important stop because people can catch a train or a subway ride from there.

Budapest bus and streetcar routes provide all-day and express service. Routes that are marked with black lettering are regular all-day routes. Routes that are marked with red lettering are express routes. Passengers who need help using the busses or streetcars go can read maps that are attached to each bus stop. These maps provide information about destinations, fares, and schedules.

Budapest also has a four-line Metro subway system that can be used to travel to more rural areas around Budapest.
Budapest has three existing color-coded subway lines that meet at Vörösmarty Square, the intersection of Kõbánya and Kispest, and Mexikói Street. A fourth line will be added soon. Each line goes to one of three cultural districts that roughly divide Budapest into three equal parts. The Metro runs from 4 AM to about 11 PM every day.

Tickets and passes for bus or rail travel can be purchased at a news stand, a major stop, or at any metro station.

Finally, Budapest also has three public taxi services available.
All taxis are clearly marked in Budapest with yellow and black stripes. They can be usually found near major transportation hubs, the airport, and at many local restaurants at night. Most taxis will take passengers around all 22 transportation districts 24 hours a day every day. Furthermore, if you make reservations in advance you can save some money off your fare.
